WHAT TO EXPECT
A Typical Day at Tuscany Unveiled
Each morning starts slow and peaceful. You’ll wake up to the sounds of birds and the breeze moving through the hills. We gather outside or in the kitchen for a simple breakfast—fresh bread, fruit, cheese, maybe some eggs or pastries, and of course, coffee.
After breakfast, we head out to paint. Some days we’ll stay right at the villa with its big views and quiet charm, and other times we’ll head into a nearby village or out to the countryside. You’ll have time to set up, ask questions, and enjoy being in the moment. There’s no pressure—just space to create.
Lunch is homemade and shared as a group. Meals are prepared with fresh, local ingredients—think garden vegetables, pasta, and simple, flavorful dishes. We also include local wine with meals: usually a red Chianti and a crisp white, with grappa, limoncello, and vin santo around for those who want to try them. If you’d like more wine or something specific, other bottles will be available for purchase.
The afternoons are flexible. You can keep painting, go on an outing with the group, or just take a nap or a walk. Some days we’ll visit a winery or explore a nearby village. Other days are slower, giving you time to breathe and enjoy the surroundings.
Dinner is relaxed and family-style. We eat together, share stories, and unwind from the day. Then it’s off to rest and get ready for another full, inspiring day tomorrow.
Do I need painting experience to attend?
No experience is required! Whether you’re a seasoned painter or picking up a brush for the first time, our retreat is designed to welcome all skill levels. Cathy Hartgraves, your instructor, adapts guidance to each guest’s comfort and creative goals.
What’s the vibe of the retreat?
This is a relaxed, small-group experience with a rustic, authentic feel. Think of it as staying at a friend’s beautiful countryside villa—unpolished in the best way, full of charm, antiques, and warm hospitality.
What’s the daily schedule like?
Each day blends painting instruction, personal creative time, and shared meals at the villa. On most days, we stay on-site, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the peaceful rhythm of the countryside. On two or three days during the retreat, we’ll enjoy optional excursions to nearby towns or cultural spots.
Where will we be staying?
The retreat is held at Villa Poggio Bernone, a private, antique-filled home in the hills of Tuscany. It’s cozy, inspiring, and removed from tourist crowds—an ideal setting to create.
Can I choose my room?
Rooms will be assigned based on the needs of the group. All accommodations are thoughtfully prepared, and we do our best to match guests with comfortable, well-suited rooms.
Are meals included?
Yes! Most meals are included and lovingly prepared with fresh, local ingredients. We’ll gather as a group to enjoy the authentic flavors of the region. Local red and white wines—including Chianti—are served with meals, along with traditional spirits like grappa, limoncello, and vin santo (a sweet dessert wine). Additional wine varieties will be available for purchase. Dietary preferences can be accommodated with advance notice.
Will we go on excursions?
Yes! We'll take a few relaxed cultural outings—perhaps to a nearby town, vineyard, or local art stop. These trips are included and optional.
What art supplies do I need to bring?
We’ll provide turpentine, paper towels, and trash bags, but you’ll need to bring your own personal art supplies. This includes your easel, palette, brushes, paints, and a few other essentials. A full supply list will be sent to you after registration, so you’ll have plenty of time to prepare. If you forget something or prefer to travel light, we’ll also point you to a local art shop where you can pick up extras.
How should I get there?
We recommend flying into Florence Airport (FLR), then taking a short taxi or tram ride to Firenze Santa Maria Novella train station — our group’s designated pickup point.
A complimentary shuttle will transport guests from the station to the villa on arrival day. To join the shuttle, please plan to arrive at the train station before 1:00 PM. Exact meeting details will be provided in advance.
If you prefer to arrive via Rome or miss the shuttle window, you're welcome to join us, but you’ll be responsible for arranging your own transportation to the villa.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. We require that all guests purchase travel insurance that covers trip delays, medical emergencies, and cancellations.
Is this retreat just for painters?
While painting is the heart of the retreat, the experience is much more than art. It’s about slowing down, reconnecting, and being inspired by Tuscany. Non-painting partners or friends are welcome if space allows — contact us for details.
How many people will be in the group?
We keep it small and intimate — generally 5 to 7 guests — so everyone gets personal attention and a true sense of community.
Will there be Wi-Fi?
Yes, though it can be slower than what you’re used to. This is part of the charm—encouraging a digital detox and deeper connection to the present moment.
Is there free time to rest or explore on my own?
Absolutely. We build in free afternoons and light days. Whether you want to nap in the garden, walk through the hills, or keep painting, the time is yours.
Can I extend my trip before or after the retreat?
Yes. Many guests choose to spend extra time in Italy. We’re happy to offer recommendations for nearby stays, transport, or things to see.
